What concierge medicine actually is
Concierge medicine — sometimes called membership medicine — is a model in which a physician cares for a much smaller number of patients in exchange for an annual membership fee. That single structural change cascades into everything patients notice: longer visits, same-day access, direct communication, and a doctor who remembers you. It is not a different kind of medicine so much as the same medicine with the time and attention returned to it.
The essential trade is deliberate. A traditional primary-care physician may carry two thousand or more patients; a concierge practice caps each physician at a few hundred. The fee replaces the volume. What you are buying is not exclusivity for its own sake, but access, continuity, and unhurried time — the conditions under which good primary care was always supposed to happen.
